History

In 2006, the membership of the Abbott Methodist Church had dwindled to 5 members, and the United Methodist Conference made the decision to merge the congregation with the FUMC Hillsboro.  The story was told that the building was going to be sold, moved off the property and turned into a wedding chapel.  The word of the impending sale got back to longtime resident Bernice Pope who went to school with Willie and Bobbie Nelson.  Bernice called Willie's best friend, Don Reed, and told him what she heard.  Don immediately called Willie and told him the church was being sold.  Willie told Don to make an offer on the church, and the deal was done.  Willie and Bobbie bought the church and saved it from destruction.  Don Reed agreed to manage the church for Willie and Bobbie.  On July 2, 2006, Willie and Bobbie Nelson re-opened the church with a invitation only service in which Willie brought the Family Band along with Leon Russell.  Pastor Denise Rogers gave the message that day.  Willie told the congregation that regardless of your current religious affiliation, once you entered the church that you are now a member of the Abbott Methodist Church.  Don and his beautiful wife Joyce were married at the Abbott Methodist Church over 60 years ago.  Don Reed managed the church for Willie for many years until his passing.  Prior to his passing, he asked Stephen L Girsh Sr to take over the management of the church which he agreed and his duties continue to this day.

Don Reed was instrumental in the reopening of the church and for many years he always had the doors open and welcomed all who would come to worship with us.
