Daily Devotional — “A Penny’s Worth of Grace”
Scripture: “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” — Ephesians 4:32
Some days begin with more weight than we expected. This morning, as I left the vet’s office after dropping off Piper Mae for her glucose curve, my heart felt tight. Worry has a way of settling into the quiet spaces — especially when someone we love is hurting and we can’t fix it ourselves.
But as I walked back to the car, something small caught my eye: a shiny copper penny lying on the pavement. It wasn’t much, just a simple coin most people would step over without a thought. But in that moment, it felt like a whisper from heaven. A reminder that God sees, God knows, and God cares about even the smallest tremors in our hearts.
I picked it up, smiled, and said, “Thank you, Jesus. I needed that today.”
Ephesians 4:32 calls us to be kind and compassionate — not only toward others, but also toward ourselves. Sometimes compassion looks like a gentle word. Sometimes it looks like patience with our own anxious thoughts. And sometimes it looks like God placing a penny in our path to remind us that His kindness is never far away.
Today, let that little coin preach a sermon: God’s grace shows up in small places. God’s kindness meets us in ordinary moments. God’s compassion is steady, even when life feels uncertain.
And just as Christ has shown us kindness beyond measure, we are invited to carry that same spirit into the world — one gentle word, one patient act, one small grace at a time.
Prayer: Lord, thank You for seeing us in the moments when our hearts feel heavy. Thank You for the small reminders of Your presence — even something as simple as a penny on the ground. Teach us to walk in kindness and compassion today, just as You have shown kindness to us. Amen.
